2021 Ram 2500 Engine Options

The Ram 2500 has perennially been one of the best-selling Heavy-Duty pickup trucks on the market. Offering drivers incredible capability and a comfortable and tech-friendly cab, there’s a lot to like about the Ram 2500 Heavy Duty. Now in its fifth generation, the Ram 2500 won the coveted Motortrend Truck of the Year when it was completely redesigned in the 2020 model year. More impressively, the Ram truck lineup took home this award in 2019, 2020 and 2021 – making it the first truck lineup to three-peat the Truck of the Year Award. In this article, we will explore the 2021 Ram 2500 Engine Options to help you determine which engine is the best fit for you.

Ram 2500 Engine Options

The Ram 2500 comes in two available engine options – one gasoline powered engine and one diesel powered engine. Each engine offers drivers incredible capability with some of the best towing and payload capacities on the market. But which engine is right for you? Let’s take a closer look at the engines available on the Ram 2500.

6.4L Hemi V8 Engine

6.4L Hemi V8 Engine

First up is the gasoline-powered 6.4L Hemi V8 Engine. This legendary engine comes standard on each 2021 Ram 2500. The engine uses Variable-Cam Timing (VCT) to deliver best-in-class standard 410 horsepower and up to 429 lb-ft of torque. This engine comes paired with the 8HP75 eight-speed automatic transmission featuring fully electronic operation and on-the-fly shift mapping. When properly equipped, this engine can tow up to 17,540 pounds and haul up to 4,010 pounds of payload capacity. The Hemi V8 engine is truly a workhorse gasoline-powered engine.

6.7L Cummins Turbo Diesel I6 Engine

Looking for even more towing capability? The 2021 Ram 2500 can be upgraded to include the notorious 6.7L Cummins Turbo Diesel I6 Engine. Ram has partnered with Cummins to deliver a diesel-powered engine to its customers dating all the way back to 1989. The Cummins Turbo Diesel engine features responsive performance and low noise, vibration and harshness for a comfortable driving experience. The 6.7L I6 engine puts out 370 horsepower and delivers up to 850 lb-ft of torque. All this adds up to an engine that can tow up to 20,000 pounds, when properly equipped!

Which Ram 2500 Engine is Right for You?

As you can see, both the Hemi V8 and Cummins Turbo Diesel bring incredible capability to the 2021 Ram 2500. If you are looking to maximize your towing capacity, you may want to opt for the diesel-powered engine which can tow about 2,500 more pounds, when properly equipped. However the Hemi V8 offers slightly more payload capacity at 4,010 pounds versus 3,160 for the Cummins engine. Generally speaking, the diesel engine will offer you more longevity but may require a larger investment in routine maintenance. The powertrain warranty on the gasoline powered engine ends at 5 years or 60,000 miles while the diesel engine is under warranty for 5 years or 100,000 miles.
