2021 Ram 1500 TRX vs 2021 Ford F-150 Raptor

The 2021 Ram 1500 TRX is arriving at Ram dealers this spring. The Ram 1500 TRX is essentially the high-end performance trim of the Ram 1500. The TRX is expected to compete with Ford’s F-150 Raptor trim which has set the standard for performance trucks over the last decade. In this article, we will compare the Ram 1500 TRX to the Ford F-150 Raptor to help you decide which truck is the right fit for you.

Engine Comparison
The all-new Ram 1500 TRX and Ford Raptor are performance trucks. If you are looking to maximize the power under the hood and off-road capability then look no further than these two trucks. The Ford Raptor comes equipped with Ford’s High-Output 3.5L EcoBoost V6 engine. This engine puts out an impressive 450 horsepower and 510 lb/ft of torque. Until recently, this was the benchmark for medium-duty pickup trucks. The Ram 1500 TRX comes equipped with the Supercharged 6.2L Hemi V8 engine. The Supercharged V8 maxes out at a jaw-dropping 702 horsepower and 650 lb/ft of torque!

Towing Comparison
While the Ram TRX engine towers over its Raptor competitor, towing capability between the trucks remains pretty similar. The Ford Raptor maxes out at 8,000 pounds of towing capacity in its SuperCrew configuration. The Ram 1500 TRX reaches a max towing capacity of 8,100 pounds giving it a slight edge. The Raptor maxes out at 1,200 pounds of payload versus 1,310 pound in the Ram TRX. If you are looking for a truck to simply tow, you can do better with other Ford and Ram trucks which carry an edge over the performance trim packages.
Off-Road Capability Comparison
Until the unveiling of the Ram TRX, the Ford Raptor was the standard for the off-road capable pickup truck. The Jeep Gladiator, which was released in the 2020 model year, hit the market as a formidable off-road competitor as it is built on the same platform as the Jeep Wrangler. The Ram 1500 TRX, however, is a more closely related competitor to the Raptor as it combines a powerful engine with off-road capability.
The 2021 Ford Raptor features High-Output, Off-Road FOX Live Valve Racing Shox which provide control and stability in the constantly changing conditions of the off-road terrain. The Raptor also features Trail Control which is essentially a cruise control system for low-traction terrain. This feature manages acceleration and braking in the constantly changing conditions so that you can focus on steering. Other off-road features in the Raptor include 11.5” of ground clearance, off-road tires and a 4×4 drivetrain.
The Ram 1500 TRX also packs cutting edge technology into its off-road capability. The TRX includes the all-new Bilstein Black Hawk e2 shock system. The Ram also includes 8 different drive modes including Sport mode, Snow mode, Mud/Sand mode and Rock mode – allowing you to handle any conditions that mother nature throws your way. The Ram TRX has 11.8” of ground clearance, beadlock-capable wheels and 35” all-terrain tires.
Interior Comparison
Both the Ram TRX and Ford Raptor are as impressive on the interior as they are on the exterior. Both vehicles combine performance-oriented technology with luxurious comfort features. The Ram takes the edge here with FCA’s 12” Uconnect Touchscreen and performance-oriented dashboards that are integrated within the digital cluster and 12” touchscreen. The Raptor shows its age as you’ll have to do with Ford’s 8” Sync 3 touchscreen. The Raptor also gets a performance dashboard, though not as extensive as its Ram competitor. Both trucks include special performance badging and trim as well as paddle shifters which are exclusive to these two trim levels.
As you can see, the Ram 1500 TRX raises the bar for performance trucks. Will a more powerful engine, the TRX offers best-in-class top speed and acceleration with a 0-60 in 4.5 seconds. We will stay tuned to see how Ford Motor Company responds to the release of the all-new Ram TRX.
